Responding to the "Bitch"

originally posted 15 September 2014

In just ten views, I have already gotten my first complaint about this video. And you will not believe what it concerns. (For crying out loud, the clip has only been up for three hours at the time of this writing…)

The person lodging the complaint stated that during Rule #4, the following word is sung when the Patti Smith Group title is shown: “bitch”.

OK, I hope you like it a little rough, because Daddy is about to spank you.

The Patti Smith Group was included on purpose. The band, and especially their lead singer and lyricist, were a huge part of the Blue Oyster Cult (B.O.C.) legacy.

1. Patti Smith once dated Allen Lanier, the rhythm guitarist and keyboardist for B.O.C.

2. Patti Smith makes a guest vocal performance on the B.O.C. track “The Revenge of Vera Gemini” from Agents of Fortune.

3. Patti Smith contributed lyrics to no less than six original B.O.C. studio albums from 1973-1983.

4. The track that is featured in Rule #4, “Baby Ice Dog”, had lyrics WRITTEN by Patti Smith.

5. Lenny Kaye, the guitarist for the Patti Smith Group, wrote some fantastic liner notes for a series of B.O.C. reissues that appeared a little over 10 years ago.

All I can say is this: before you come to me with a complaint, do your homework first. If you can’t do that, at least be civil, unlike the e-mail I received.

And, for those paying attention, each track was selected for a reason. Some reasons are more subtle and may take some time to link together.

Love to you all.
